International Student Guide: Frequently Asked Questions

A library research guide catering to our international students

What do I need to check out books?

Your student ID card! Currently enrolled students, faculty and staff can check out circulating materials with a valid SCC ID card. You can access our official loan policy here.

How do I find scholarly articles?

When your professor says you need to use scholarly articles, what they mean is that the article has to be written by an expert in a particular academic field. The best place to find scholarly articles is through the library databases.

What do I owe if I am late returning a book?

We don't have any late fees for our library books, however, if you have overdue books a hold is placed on your account until the item is returned. This means you won't be able to register for classes, get grades, or request a transcript - so you want to make sure you return all the library materials you check out. We will notify you through CougarMail if you have an overdue item.
There are overdue fines if you are late returning an item that was on Reserve. These result in overdue fees because they are frequently used and another student may be waiting to use the same material. For a 2-hour Reserve item the late fees are 50 cents/hour. For a 7-day Reserve item the late fee is $1/day.

How do I renew my books?

The easiest way is to go to the library website and click on "Access Your Account" (located in the middle of the page). Once there you will enter your name and your SCC ID number (followed by the letters "SC") to get into your account. You will then see all the items you have checked out and select the option to renew. If the items are renewable you will see a new due date appear. If an item isn't renewable it will let you know and the item will need to be returned.
You can also call the Circulation Desk (636-922-8434) for assistance with renewing books.

Do you have videos I can check out?

Yes, we have DVDs you can check out for 10 days if the video isn't on reserve for a class. You can look at a list of our videos or search for a title in the catalog. The DVDs available for checkout are on the first floor of the library. They are located on the first two rows of shelves leading to our Reference collection.

We also have a number of streaming options available.

How do I find a book in this library?

Books available for checkout are located on the 2nd floor of the library. If you need assistance finding one you can always ask a Reference Librarian for help.

Can I print from my laptop? (Wireless Printing)

Yes! Wireless printing is available on campus. SCC’s wireless printing supports the following file formats: Word, PDF, Excel, and PowerPoint. All jobs will print single-sided.
  • Login to your CougarMail account and send the document as an attachment to eprint@stchas.edu

  • After your document is sent, go to any print release station on campus and type in your Cougar username (without the @my.stchas.edu ending) to print.

  • Print Jobs will be held for 3 hours.

Does the library carry textbooks?

The library doesn't normally purchase textbooks for the general collection. Often instructors will provide us with a copy of the textbook for their course to hold on Reserve so that it will be available for their students to check out for 2-hours in the library.

Is there a quiet study area?

Yes! The study area on the second floor of the library is the quiet study area. We have a no cell phone policy for this space. It's the ideal place to study on campus if you like to avoid distractions.

We also have study rooms on the second floor. Keys to the study rooms can be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Rooms check out for three hours at a time and due to popularity may not be reserved in advance.

My instructor put a book/video/CD on reserve. Where do I get it?

If your instructor has placed something for you on Reserve you'll need to go to the Circulation Desk to check the material out. Make sure you have your SCC ID with you to check it out.
Typically items are only available for in-library use, meaning you'll have to read/watch the material in the library. The standard check-out time for Reserve material is 2 hours.
