United States History to 1877: Getting Started

HIS 101

Welcome!

This guide is designed to help you find primary source material as well as quality secondary sources for your HIS 101 projects. If you have any questions or need help from a librarian please stop by the reference desk or contact me directly.

Types of Information

Primary Sources - original sources produced during the time period; a source that has not been interpreted or analyzed. Examples include - diaries, eyewitness accounts, speeches, documents, pictures.

Secondary Sources - sources that comment on primary source material; authors cite many different primary and secondary sources to give the material context and analysis.

Format does not determine type of source!

Both of these sources can be found online and in print. They can be in books/eBooks, library databases, and freely available on the internet.
