Call Numbers for Music Resources (print books):

The SCC Library Classic Catalog/Locate provides a call number and location for each item. Consult these call numbers and subject headings related to music resources organized according to the Library of Congress Classification System. View an example of how to read a call number.
Class M, for music, is subdivided into three main sections:

  • M notated music (scores)
  • ML literature of music (books about music, such as biographies, histories, discographies, thematic indexes, etc.)
  • MT musical instruction and study (method books, studies and exercises intended for pedagogical use (as opposed for concert use), treatises, books on music theory, music-appreciation textbooks (even those with extensive musical examples), etc.; includes scores and books).

    Additional subclasses within the main ranges of classes for music:
  • M 1-5000 -  Instrumental Music: Solo and Ensembles
  • M 1495-2199: Vocal Music
  • ML 1-3930: Literature on Music
  • ML 1-5: History and criticism
  • MT 1-960: Musical Instruction and Study
