Faculty Resources and Services

The librarians are here to assist you with your instruction and research needs.

Face to Face Instruction

Students are often overwhelmed when faced with a research assignment. There is so much information available through the library and on the web that it can become hard for students to cut through the "noise" to find the "good stuff."  The librarians can help introduce your students to the research process by instructing them on how to find and evaluate information.

Class instruction is available to you for any class and the librarians can create a customized research session based on the needs of your course and assignment.  We can speak to issues such as evaluation of sources, the difference between using online databases and the web, and how to use specialized resources.  We can do a single session or multiple sessions, with an emphasis on a different topic each session.

Use this form to schedule a session, or contact the reference desk to reserve a date and time.  We will want to discuss with you what to cover in the session. If you’re not sure what you want to be covered, we can discuss the assignment and give ideas and suggestions on what to include. Instruction usually takes place in the computer lab on the first floor of the library but we can also visit your class for quick overviews of library resources.

Things to consider when adding a session to your course:

  • Instruction works best when the students have an assignment requiring research.
  • The more specific you can be about your goals for instruction the better we can match the content of the session.
  • Schedule your session to correspond with when students are working on the assignment.
  • The earlier you make arrangements, the more likely we will be able to accommodate your choice of date.

Online Instruction

The online Library Tutorial is an online version of our COL 101-Introduction to the Library. Topics covered in the tutorial include:

  • Selecting Keywords
  • Finding Books
  • Finding Articles
  • Evaluating Sources
  • Understanding Citations
  • Library Help

Students can complete this at any time during the semester. There is a quiz at the end of the tutorial which the student can print out and turn in their instructor as proof of completion. Contact the librarians for more information on using the online tutorial.

We also have a few video tutorials available that you can easily embed in your Canvas course. If you need something more specific, the librarians can work with you to create a video tutorial that covers what you want your students to learn about research.
